Shantideva: How to Wake Up a Hero ( A special adaptation for children and families)

I am very  excited to share this beautiful version of The Way of the Bodhissatva, adapted by Dominique Townsend especially for children and their families, and illustrated by Tenzin Norbu. Townsend was “inspired  to begin this project when studying Buddhist ethics  and felt moved  in particular  how violence and suffering can affect children.” Norbu “hails from a lineage of painters dating back more than four hundred  years. He mixes the tantangka genre with creative and novel images of the Himalayan and Tibetan landscapes.” Shantideva’s Way of the Bodhisattva is a classic in Buddhist ethics centering on compassion and our interconnectedness with all things . And what kid can resist the story of a would be monk who spends his entire day, eating, sleeping and pooping! We are grateful for the vast interconnected, intercommunity of all living and non-living things. May all beings be safe. May all beings be happy, May all beings be healthy. May all beings find their true nature. And may all beings be free ( and as my students have added) ….to go outside.

“Most of the monks didn’t even know Shantideva’s name. They called him the monk who only eats, sleeps and poops!”
