The story of the week is The Woman Who Outshone the Sun, from a poem by Alexandro Cruz Martinez and pictures by Fernando Olivera. Martinez was a Zapotec Indian poet who spent years collecting the oral traditions of his people, including the story of Lucia Zenteno, The Woman Who Outshone the Sun. He was killed while helping to organize the Zapotec people to reclaim their lost water rights. The people learn in the course of the story their gratitude for the river, and their mutual responsibilities and obligations to each other, the river and the natural world. Enjoy.
