The story of the week is Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter. I like how unnerving this recognized classic can be to the contemporary adult reader. Children inevitably find it compelling and worthy of their undivided attention! I recall finding it especially noteworthy that Peter Rabbit almost got away except for the fact that he got caught in a bird net because of the large brass buttons on his brand new jacket. He only escapes when he ditches the jacket! I think this was somehow interpreted as a nascent critique of capitalism in my counter culture family upbringing. In any case there is much to explore and enjoy in this story where “the woods” represent safety and home, and the “garden” danger and forbidden fruit. Enjoy.
