With the winter solstice coming up next week we have been preparing for winter, celebrating the sun and learning about what causes the changes of the seasons. The story of the week is On Earth by G. Brian Karas. It does a great job making complex concepts like “the tilt of the earth’s axis” somewhat accessible to younger kids. I say “somewhat” because thinking about why the seasons change and imagining with three and four year olds that we live on a huge sphere that is turning on its axis and revolving around a stationary sun is a delightful if somewhat daunting task. A reviewer on Amazon does a good job describing the book. “The story ties together the basic elements of the passage of time in a way that is accessible, engaging and entertaining for young children. My children are all 3 and under and have been enjoying this book for more than a year. As they get older they understand more and more of what goes on in the book. ” Enjoy!
