This week’s story is “The Princess of the Rice Fields” an Indonesian folktale retold by Hisaka Kimishima. This is a good example of how “traditional stories” from indigenous peoples recognize the sacred powers of plants. This story is also a bit “racy”in that it deals with forbidden love, and when the young woman and young man are turned into rice plants, “like lovers folded in each other’s arms, they swayed and danced with the wind.” As always make your own informed decisions about what stories and media you expose your children to. Enjoy!
