Happy Winter Solstice! December 21st, 2020! Let us appreciate and celebrate the sun, the changing seasons, winter, the short days, the long nights, our friends, families, communities, and the interconnectedness of all life. And also take this time to reckon with our sadness, our difficulties, our challenges, and find ways to grieve, mourn and celebrate the ones we have lost. Finally, find ways to get outside, to enjoy the winter, embrace its wonders. I had the pleasure of getting to know a Norwegian girl, Mirja, and her family, in my afterschool program, and I learned a new word, “friluftsliv,” or “open air living,” especially as it applies to finding ways to enjoy the cold winter months. Enjoy this reading of “The Solstice Badger,” by Robin Mcfadden, with your family, and stay tuned to this blog for lots of suggestions as to how to play, explore, learn and grow outside ( and inside) duringĀ the cold, winter months!
